[section]It's a getaway! Seros quickly hops aboard the wagon, finding himself once more next to Fhanna, but in a much different context than other previous, shall one say, steamier, ones. Sylvain releases his summoned canine, sure to meet a quick death. Several of the stirges swiftly assail the poor pooch. It yelps in pain as it succumbs to the attack of the blood-suckers. He hops on the back and prepares his bow. Dravyin smashes his terbutje into one of the closer creatures, clubbing it back to the swampy mire from whence it came. As soon as Caius hops aboard, Fhanna whips the reigns and giddy-ups the horses in motion. Dravyin immediately follows suit. As the party rushes north, the horses do their best to navigate the treacherous swampy road. The stirges follow close behind in pursuit. It does not look like the party will make it. The path leads up a small hill, maybe only a dozen feet high, sticking out like an island in the bog. Fhanna tries to will the horses faster, but the incline of the hill slows them down even more. The insects creep ever closer, and the will be upon the party unless some kind of drastic action is taken. As the wagon rounds top of the hill, Caius speaks up. "You guys keep running! I'm already weak and a liability. Amenthia shall care for me in this life or the next." Normally calm and steadfast, the paladin yells forth a bloodcurdling war cry. He leaps off the wagon and charges into the swarm, scythe high above his head. The wagon clears the top and heads back down the otherside. As the hill blocks the party's collective view, Caius' fate is unknown to them. Unless the will of the gods take kindly to Caius' valiant final actions, Caius is gone. Everyone sits in stunned silence as Fhanna continues to drive the horses. Hours pass by and the ground dries up. They are out of the swamp by the time the sun begins to set. Not long thereafter, not long at all really, the green wall of the Kekuku pines is directly in front of them. The heat and humidity dissipate with the setting of the sun and the departure of the swamp.
