Ok so heres what i have so far for my own take on this. Its a complete work in progress so feel free to make suggestions, comment on any problems etc so far.
THere are three levels to "The dreaming"
The Dreamscape
THe Dreamplane
and The dreamworld
(Havnt given them names yet)
The Dreamscape
This is a persons personal dreaming space. When you go to sleep, your peronal dreamscape is zcreated. When you wake up it disappears. \It is a semi-stable world based upon your own mind.
If another dreamer comes into your dreamscape, you have an advantage over them. This means if both are trained dreamers, the person whose dreamscape they are in, has an upper hand. But if a trained dreamer enters a non-dreamers/untrained dreamers fdreamscape they can overpower them and literally bend the dreamscape to their will.
Death in a dreamscape is not fatal (fatal dmg becomes nonfatal?), BUT a dreamscape can be used by a much stronger dreamer to imprison another person (they are basically in a coma in waking life and imprisoned in the dream).
**imprisoner must dstay in their dream to keep them there or maybe can imprison them in their own dreamscape and maintain it while they are awake? requires a strong dreamer?**
A persons dreamscape is also access to their minds, hence a very good way to get information by a strong dreamer. It is possible to protect your dreams and shield them.
When you are lucid in your dreams (and hence your dreamscape), if you try you can define an "edge" to the dream. Kind of like being in a bubble and seeing outside through the side of your eye. With strong will (and skill?) you can push yourself out of your dreamscape and hence enter the dreamplane
The Dreamplane
The dreamplane is the connection between everyones dreams. It appears as a great endless fog covered plain. Fellow dreamers can see each other moving around through the fog (When they .cross paths) although there is no sense of distance. Someone who you see for a second can be impossibly "far" away as soon as they are out of site. The dreamplane is made up off dreamscapes (which look like large hazy bubbles (kinda like a snowglobe) as well as semi stable "places" which are maintained by dreamers
for example, if many dreamers attempt to get to a place in the dreamscape it will become more permanent. if they stop going there it will disappear but in the meantime while it is being used often, even when they are not present the place exists. The dreamplane is also quite malleable like the dreamscape in this way.
For instance i, a dreamer could get to the dreamplane and by my will imagine a \coffee table and couches ahead of me. If my will is strong enough the fog will clear and it will be ahead of me. When i leave it will disappear.
If many people come to that place it gains permanence, kind of like a bubble of order in the chaos.
The dreamplane is also like a connection to the "universal subconscious", people see signs and events occur in the fog although this is rare.
Death in the dreamplane is permanent or has psychological effects? (put out of action for large amounts of time)
The Dreamworld
This is like a mirror of the true world. The more stable something is in the real world, the more stable it is in the dream world. Animals who sleep can be seen acting as they normally would (as they dream the same thing) and people in their dreams move around and appear and disappear. **Quite common for people to touch the dreamworld in their dreams??**
Dreamworld is closer to the "magical essense" of the world, being created from it. Forging of certain items can be done in the dream world and then be brought to the real world. THe dreamworld can be used to make contact with people far away, (dreamers), scouting out places, and finding answersv. sometimes concentrating on a place you need to go then stepping through a door will take you there, even if you dont know what place that is.
dreamers have some control over their environment. Eg. to change something ldepends on how big a change it is, and how many other people are there to see it.
i.e. if i want to change my appearance (clothes face etc) and there are people watching i have to use a will save to try an overpower them (unless they know and are "Accepting" the change)
The dream is a dangerous place because nightmares be.come real. if you are scared an2d imagine something, it may just appear there and become real. the more you beleive it the more real it becomes. Even a seasoned dreamer is in real danger walking the dream (whether the dreamplane or the Dreamworld etc)
There are spirits and even people who live in the dream world. Some dreamers who live their (reculses in life who somehow sustain their bodies in the dream?), creatures and incorporeals. The dreaming can be used to twist someone/something to change them in the true world.
That gives the option of guides and enemies in the Dream world as well as the waking world (or like you suggested Radiantman, a combo villian).
Im trying to make the dream as a useful tool, a dangerous place to go with great benefits as well as a mystical place to throw some interesting flavour into the world and a campaign.
Anyway thats most of what i have so far. Id really love to hear suggestions on broadening the scope of it, any problems, additions with this idea or just your own creations relating to a dream world etc etc
thanks guys love your work!
