Lycanthrope gestalt campaign

I'll actually go against the grain and recommend that each race has lycanthropes of many animals.

To me that suggest interesting politics, conflicts and alliances that trancend the races. (Will the dwarf werewolf feel more loyal to his community of fellow dwarves or the multiracial pack of werewolves he howls with under the Wolfmoon).

Skirmishes and regular warfare between different clans of lycanthropes causing problematic relations between nations and races. (Will the human Wereboar prince of Targetia sadistic killing and eating citizens of the neighboring Gnome city Merbolos lead to offical war or just an assasination by the secret guild of werebadgers the dead gnomes belonged to).

Not really my thing, but I think a great campaign could be fashioned from stuff like that.

Now THAT is exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for :D Yes, it will make the game much more complex, but also more interesting IMHO.

Corbert,
With using the gestalt rules, what does a character level-up in once the were-side is finished?

Basically they choose any class they want that I allow. For example, the werewolf template class is only 3 levels, so a werewolf/fighter gestalt at level 4 would be for example, rogue 1 werewolf 3/fighter 4.

Alrighty, was just curious. Thanks.

Ah, thanks for the template. As far as balance, I'm not sure, I only thought up the campaign idea a couple days ago, so its still very much in the development stage. As far as a 20 level class for all weres, I'm not sure that would work very well, for the same reason you brought up, the stat mods. What would go in the "dead" levels for were classes other than Were(Dire Boar)?

Firstly, you need to spread stuff out. Secondly, there will be dead levels, but that really doesn't matter because you're using gestalt. All you need to do is make sure that a WereDireBoar is roughly balanced with a WereRat. This will probably involve slowing the stat boosts down greatly.

Ex:

Werecritter:
HD / Saves / Skills / BAB: As Animal HD.
Class Skills: Spot, Listen, Jump, Tumble, Climb, Swim, Survival

Class Features:
Ability Boost: At Lvl 1 a Werecritter gains a +2 bonus to Wisdom. At L3 and each odd level thereafter the werecritter gains a cumulative +2 boost to any one physical stat of their choice; however the same ability may not be chosen for two consecutive boosts. These physical stat boosts only apply when the werecritter is in Hybrid or Animal form.

DR: At L2 a Werecritter gains DR 1/Silver. At every even level this DR increases by 1 to a max of DR 10/Silver at L20.

And so on.

I would suggest using Sean Reynolds 'Curse of the Moon' simply from the viewpoint of balance. A gestalt Dwarven Wereboar Barbarian would be far more powerful than an equal level half-elf Wererat Ranger...as a fer instance.

The PDF uses feats and some unique mechanics to better represent the lycanthrope myth...I highly recommend it. To 'gestalt' the rules you simply grant a bonus Were feat at all odd levels.

That way you can focus on the roleplaying aspect instead of trying to manage overpowered combinations or research/design templates/progressions for critter X.
