[M&M2e] Red Sands Chronicles

Seif decapitates the remaining mutant.
Seif Impale: 22 vs 16 --> Hit.
GM FIAT: Fatality!

With the mutants driven away or slaughtered, they group stands about less then a quarter mile from the end of the ruins and the start of the quarter mile wide no-mans land between the ruined city and the base settlement.

[sblock=Infrared]
There seems to be some faint heat signatures roaming around in the no-man's land and the settlement. Possible mutants?

Brian Shaughnessy

The current mutant assault ended, Brian stumbles out of hiding. "Think we lost whatever element of surprise we had, so if you don't mind, I'll stick with you folks in the Big Scary Robot group.

"But I'm not sure if we're out of the desert yet. There's still a couple someone's moving about the no man's land and the settlement."

Brian stutters as he reaches the end of the sentence, looking about and quickly adding. "At least, I thought I caught movement out there through a gap in the mist. Deezy could probably tell better with those heat sensor things, yeah?"

"Con-firmed!" Deezy cheerfully agrees as she resets the sensor grid and aligns the tactical display again. "Too far and too faint to get a good readout on numbers or sizes. That's a pretty great sword you have there, Mister Seif. I'd love to take it apart and see what it uses for a heating element...and where it stores the water too!"

Seif decapitates the remaining mutant.
The desert man tilted back his head and shouted out the last of the twisty, tight-gutted feeling, gradually returning to normal with the dying of the sound....

"I hate mutants."

Seif laid his fingers on the thick rubber hose coming out of the high-tech grip of each of the two swords of Qssim and traced it back to the point where it slotted into a fairly rounded, metallic... thing strapped at the small of his back. Three circular dials with golden brass reinforcements decorated the face of it, steady or softly trembling needles pointing to faded-out, esoteric measures. A flat, leather-wrapped twist cap topped the device, its purpose fairly obvious.

Most of his attention was on the way ahead though -- and, strangely enough, on the still smoldering corpse... “First, we report our findings to the lord,” is what he chose to say just then. “Klatta?”

[sblock=Actions]He’s asking Deezy to contact lord Burroughmeister and report their situation. If she’s unwilling to do it helself, he can either speak through her radio (if possible) or whistle up his camel and make the call himself.

Relique, could I get a Notice +10 on the town wall itself please? Are the gates closed? The walls intact? Are they circular or do they stop at a cliff edge on each side? In short, what's the best likely entrance into the town should they get there?[/sblock]

The bottom settlement appears to have a wall, but there's too much dust in the air to tell it's condition.

Deezy nods and signals the convoy.

"Hi, this is Deezy. I'm up here with the others, and...well...this place is full of these mutant guys who are hard to see and kind of hard to kill too. We're fine though, but there's more up ahead. So. You know. Be careful, alright?"

“All sentries should be on high alert for more Wasteland Ghosts,” confirmed Seif on his own camel radio. "An unknown number are up ahead in the cleared area and more might be lurking in the ruins around us, so - yes - be careful if you approach. They can only be seen from the corner of your eyes."

A breath, then, “Shall we take this town for you, lord?”

"I will alert our brothers to watch out for any mutants that may try to sneak aboard a crawler."

A breath, then, Shall we take this town for you, lord?

"Considering Sister Deezy's report, I am certain that our brothers will be more comfortable if they had some first hand knowledge that no one would be launching rockets at us while we pass that settlement."

CHAPTER VI: TANANKA BLUFF

Cautiously, the group makes their way towards the settlement. As you pass through the ruins you can't help to feel a bit of uneasiness due to the fact that you know that each step you make you are being watched by the invisible eyes of wasteland ghosts. As you pass the last and final row of ruined building before reaching the no-man's land, you notice what appears to be a large two-tiered circular platform. The platform's outer ring has a height of about three feet with the inner platform being about a foot lower in height. Their appears to be a ten foot wide pit at the center of the structure. The area around the structure has a faint smell of death/decay and petrol.

[sblock=Seif and Sahid]
The structure is used for "sky burials" and cremation... which might explain why mutants the ruins were not cleared of mutants.

The no-man's land itself consists of a stretch of several blocks worth of buildings that were completely leveled to the ground and pulverized so that the area has an appearance of being a small wasteland covered by misshapen concrete, mortar, and brick rocks. As you transverse through the no-man's land you are able to see brief glimpses of the wandering mutants who are momentarily rendered visible due to the amount of smoke and dust in the air.

Not to long after entering into the no-man's land you get your first glances of the settlement. The "base" settlement appears to be a small grouping of no more then a few dozen small buildings that were enclosed by what appears to be a wall that is no more then about fifteen feet in height. and is flanked by a thirty foot wide ditch that is spanned by a short bridge that appears wide enough to hold two heavy crawlers.

The settlement's entrance seems to be guarded by a combination of a rudimentary forward opening gate that appears to have been torn down, and by a series of pylons that appear as if they could be raised or lowered at a moment's noticed. From your vantage point on the outside of the town, you are able to see that the square that the buildings surround is littered with the bodies of the dead. One appears to be "crucified" on a post in the center of the square.

[sblock=infravision]
Deezy and Brian can see some mutants wandering inside the walls (but not many). They seem to be wandering near the dead.

You also can tell that the "crucified" person is still alive (he's giving off heat and his temperature doesn't appear to be fading).

From your position, you are also able to tell that there is no road towards the settlement located on the mesa. Instead, what appeared to be a road is actually a series of funicular railways that climb to the top of the mesa.

[sblock=Deezy]
Now that the signal (short and long beeps) is clear you can make out a definite pattern:
Code:
... --- ...   ... --- ...   ... --- ...   - .-. .- .--. .--. . -..   .. -.   -... ..- -. -.- . .-.   -. . . -..   .... . .-.. .--.
SOS SOS TRAPPED IN BUNKER NEED HELP

Deezy scowled as she panned around, the torso of the Beast twisting to and fro, grinding metallically as it moved. This was a bad scene, she decided. This was as bad as a scene got. The fella on the cross was pretty obviously the bait for a trap, but she couldn't tell what, exactly.

Then the signal, which she'd left playing in the background in the cockpit, caught her attention. She closed her eyes and listened...then suddenly, eagerly, started tapping letters into the cockpit display. One at a time. Substitution codes weren't uncommon in the wastes. Patterns of tones were much easier to discern than words on weak signals.

She nearly fumbled and hit the wrong button as she slammed her fingers on the 'transmit' control.

"Guys! I have something! That signal we've been tracking here...it's a code! It's a call for help coming from a bunker. It MUST be nearby too. The signal's been getting stronger and stronger all this time. Also, the guy on the cross is alive, but I think he's bait so be careful if you want to go get a look."

The Ottoman nods and trots ahead, his steps silent as if he was just an illusion. His white robe mixes and blends with the surroundings, as he makes his way into the ruins of the settlement.
