M. Night Shyamalans "The Village"

The movie looked spooky enough in the previews and such that we saw, but that isn't what I look for in an M. Night Shaymalan film. His first two were great because they had a twist that (for the most part) you didn't see coming at the end. Signs was a major disappointment in that regard. I'm hoping this is more in the venue of Unbreakable and Sixth Sense, but I have this feeling I'm going to be disappointed - it just seems hard to have a twist around creepy monsters.

I was really surprised when I read one article/interview thing back when Shyamalan had just started work on this movie and it mentioned albatwitches in it. Now, unless the legend is much bigger than I realize, AFAIK the story of albatwitches is a strictly local one here in town. The name is supposedly derived from 'apple-snitch' somehow, and they're these little monkey/gnome guys that live in wooded areas. The name comes from what's supposedly one of their favorite foods to steal. Really neat I thought that he'd pay attention to a tiny little legend from a little putz town like here. ;)

Shyamalan grew up in Pennsylvania and went to Episcopal Academy (where he was a classmate of Sagiro, interestingly enough.) That must be why he knows of local legends.

I caughtbits of the preview stuff during unbreakable (an awesome film and the only one of his that I've seen) and all I need to know is that is has sigorny weaver in it. :D oh yeah, seeing that. Hopefully it will help me blot out alien resurection....

Watching the 7 minute preview of this movie during the Unbreakable showing on TV. It looks really good. Spooky, dark, carefully detailed, lots of historical touches to keep the movie immersive, and well acted.

Actually, it seemed more than slightly like a revisitation of Signs. Lots Lots of scared people in a rural setting bracing themselves for an invasion by silent killers, boarding up their windows and locking themselves in the cellar.

And that blind woman who wouldn't go down in the cellar despite the begging and pleading...Just stood in the doorway with her hand outstretched. I just wanted a huge claw to come out of nowhere and bat her head off.
