I just watched this movie again (the original). It still holds up as a great revenge movie! And, as far as post-apocalyptic fare goes, it doesn't get much better. I remember a movie called Circuitry Man being pretty good, too, but this was a long time ago, and I may be remembering it through the eyes of a younger me.

Anyway, Mad Max. Great movie.

I also watched Mad Max recently. I believe it was the first time I had seen it with its original Australian sound. When they brought it to America, they redubbed the entire movie, apparently because Australian English was deemed too foreign for American ears.

Not sure which version you are referring to. But the back of the video I watched said something to the effect of it being the first time the original sound was released in the U.S. The "making of" video shows some clips from the dubbed version, with Mel Gibson redubbed to sound very, very American (this was back in the days when he still used an Aussie accent.)

I was simply referring to the version you spoke of...(?) with the American accents. And of course, Mel is Australian, so he wasn't really "using" the accent!

I just meant that I didn't know there was a dubbed version. I am fairly certain I have always seen the Aussie version.

Interestingly, Gibson was actually born in the U.S. My understanding is that his dad is American (and lives in California, if I remember correctly) and his Mom was an Aussie. I do believe he spent most of his childhood in Australia though.

The Wikipedia page on Mad Max has a nice writeup about the hows and whys of the dubbed version (assuming anyone can believe what Wikipedia says, so take it with the appropriate grain of salt.) According to the page, the un-dubbed version didn't come to the U.S. until 2000.

I've only seen the dubbed version, and thought it was annoying how the lips never entirely matched up with the dialogue - but was pretty darn close to matching up. I always wondered why Max had more of an accent in the sequels than in the original.

I've only seen it on TV or HBO (well, I guess that is TV). I always liked it, though. Now that I know an undubbed version exists, I guess I will have to go get the DVD.

Well, paint me purple. I thought for sure he was Australian. Born in America? Hmph! Shows what I know!

I picked up the version for ten dollars... Kroger I think.

What I found interesting was how the themes of Mad Max were essentially the same themes as Braveheart. I wonder if he was conscious of the simliarities...
