Magebred Animals

I have looked but could not find the information. So I put the question. (And hopefully where the rule is found.)

Can Magebred Animals be used as Familars? And if so what level? (I figure they would count as Improved Familiars at least.)

Unlike with animal companions, I don't see why they would be excluded. As to level, I'd say 5th. The gain a feat which is not shared, and better physical stats, but none if the other bonuses that the 7th level improved familiars get.

I agree with pseudonym. Since familiars do not scale in the same way as animal companions, and aren't as combat-worthy, I'd say they are fine with the improved familiar feat. I wouldn't even give a minimum level; if a first level wizard wants a magebred toad, let her have it.

The Dm'd have to keep a control over it but I think this could work just fine.

Create a guild of mage breeders who sell familiars. They are modestly better than what you can acquire in the wilds but much more expensive. Buying one that you want is much faster than finding one.

I think if they were substantively better than the base you'd have to move them to 5th level. But that would be a quality judgment.
