Magic Immunity vs. Evard's Black Tentacles

Just curious - who wins?

If a wizard casts EBT in an area around a creature with Magic Immunity (say an iron golem for argument's sake), do the tentacles affect it, or does the creature's immunity protect it from the (magical) tentacles? Or is magic immunity just a SR roll that the creature always wins?

The MM lays out what affects do and do not affect the creature, and EBT is not listed. But, I'm still hazy on the whole area effect thing - if it was spell resistance and not magic immunity the EBT would affect the creature w/o a spell resistance roll.

Good question. Considering that the bonus to a magic weapon is supernatural, and that these bonuses aren't specifically excluded from a golem's magic immunity, I'm thinking the ability is rather poorly written.

I'd consider their immunity to be unbeatable spell resistance against any spell that allows for such resistance. I don't know how I'd rule on supernatural abilities like breath weapons -- according to the rules, it looks like they should be immune.

Magic immunity is just like infinite SR. If a spell or ability is not subject to SR, magic immunity does not protect.

Evard's Black Tentacles is not subject to SR, therefore a golem can be attacked by the tentacles.

Supernatural abilities are not subject to SR-- check this SRD page.

Reread the golem's description of magic immunity:

Magic Immunity (Ex): Golems completely resist most magical and supernatural effects, except where otherwise noted below.

And there's the problem.

A wizard who summoned monsters to deal with an Iron Golem would have some serious problems.... unless some "Magic Fang" spells are scattered about.

You could have an Iron Golem with a host of Dire Weasels latched onto him, not doing any damage, which is an amusing thought. ;)

Not really. Iron golems have DR 50/+3. Any celestial or fiendish creature with 12+ HD have DR 10/+3. Therefore, their natural attacks count as +3 weapons for purposes of overcoming DR; thus, such creatures can harm iron golems.

Summon monster VI can get you a celestial dire bear, complete with 12 HD and DR 10/+3; summon monster VII can call up a fiendish dire tiger, not to mention a bebilith; etc.
