I was trying to design a magic item for the 100 adventure ideas in the DMG. All it says "38 A map showing the location of an ancient magic forge is discovered."
I've decided to knock it down in power level (While ancients surely had mundane items, "ancient" usually associated with artifact or near artifact ability.). I've also decided to change it to an anvil to make more easily portable.
I was thinking a small bonus (maybe +5) to craft skills require an anvil. I also want it to allow metal items to be reforged and possibly be upgraded to masterwork items. Finally, I would like various versions of the anvil to grant the Magical Artisan feat (Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting; reduces XP cost for creating magical items with one item creation feat by 25%) for different item creation feats.
The +5 to craft I figure to be 500gp. The reforging of items I guessed to equivelant to a fabricate spell. I decided it didn't need to be used more than 1/day for magic item creation since creating a magic item takes at least one day. So my guess for that cost is 18,000 * 90% (requires craft skill to use) or 16,200gp. I'm not sure about the cost for granting the feat.
