Magic item, arcane or divine ?

Other than scrolls, I'm not aware of any differentiation in the rules. Some spells are only available on certain lists, of course, but other than that I don't think you can tell the difference by the RAW.

In Magic of Faerûn, with a DC 20 Knowledge[Religion] one can know the patron deity of a divine magic item. I should have given that one before...

Knowing the origin can be very important to some characters who shun arcane / divine magics.

IMHO, Spellcraft maybe the right skill...

What's a divine magic item as defined in Magic of Faerûn? Is it merely something created by a divine spellcaster? Can you have a divine AND arcane item?

It doesn't provide a definition... it's just a expanded skill usage.

However, I would say that if a divine spellcaster cooperated with an arcane spellcaster to craft an item, you could get the patron deity of the divine one.

That would make sense. If you're going for house rules, then I would agree that Spellcraft would be a good skill to use. Probably in connection with the Detect Magic spell, just like figuring out what school of magic was used.

You might try legend lore. That should tell you the creator, as long as he or the item are powerful enough to be "legendary."

So, each item has a patron deity? What happens when two or more divine casters cooperate on one item? That seems like a hassle to figure out the patron deities of magical items. You'll need a table with percentages for each deity and/or combination thereof for any random items. :)

Regardless, I'm not sure a check is even required. How about if someone just assumes it's divine? Can that someone just use the knowledge (religion) check anyway? If it fails, it's either not a divine item or he doesn't know, and either way it doesn't matter much.

Hmm, if two divine spellcasters with different patron deities cooperated, just give the two patrons deities.
