Having just looked in my Magic of Faerûn book, I've figured out your error and the answer to your question. The DC 20 Knowledge (religion) check lets one know the patron deity of a religious magic item. Huge difference, and far easier to adjudicate. Knowing the origin can be very important to some characters who shun arcane / divine magics.
IMHO, Spellcraft maybe the right skill...
