Magic item Wish Lists + RP

Hello. In DMG you can find an entry saying that it's good idea to ask players to make a wish list of items they want to get, and then add those items to the treasure (assuming those items aren't too powerful yet). That's good idea, but...

I didn't like the idea of asking players to make a list outside the game, (I'm not a waiter and D&D is not a restaurant) so I had this little idea how to put it into the story.

Players meet and help somehow (encounter/skill challange) a mysterious Npc. After expressing his gratitude, his eyes begin to glow bright light, and his voice becomes like thunder. Then he says :

"You have helped my servant mortals. For that I can help you. I have power over the stream of time. I can change future events. Name goods you want to get, and in time, you will."

Or something like that. The Nps is an agent of an unknown planar power. That being has limited power over time and can indeed make players recieve stuff they want. However, if they ask for Vorporal weapon it will probably take some time till DM puts it in treasure. If players want to make too long lists, you can say:

"Major manipulation with future can lead to terrible consequenses, it's enough for now".

Feel free to use any part of this idea in your own game.
