I play a controller wizard in one game and find that 'ray of frost' comes in handy to slow enemies down. I use a staff for the bonus to block a hit, plus I like the flavor of a staff. I broke down and took the feat 'leather armor proficency' after some bad times with some kobolds. I also took the feat '+2 to all untrained skills' to help in skill challenges and things like climb and excape.
I seem to keep swaping out my daily spell at each level. If you spend more time in typical dungeons you may want 'acid arrow' over 'rolling ball of fire', which is better in large areas where you can steer clear if friends. Although my 5th level 'hand of ice' daily gets a lot of milage.
