Magic Items with Levels

Last week I posted a link to a home-brewed rules article on another site that talked about new ideas for magic items. This week there are rules for magic items that you level up by applying experience points into them:

It seems pretty cool. I created a magic item for my campaign, a druid 2 handed staff, to test out the waters, but my party is epic level and these rules seem to fit lower levels at least at first. We'll see whether they're adaptable to higher level or not. I'll have to adjust his XP chart. It is a cool idea though.

I'm sure nothing...I've never actually seen those variant rules before, and it seems that the person who wrote the article I posted, and the Familiar creators had the same type of idea in mind when they made those two things. I'd use either probably; basically you chose between sacrificing XP for an item, or sacrificing a feat for it. I like the leveling rules because it seems to have built into it a lot of leeway for the DM to be very creative.

I don't know, I'm still testing out the leveling rules, and like I said I've never played with the familiar rules.

Does the item familiar play out well?

Rules like this were featured in a Dragon issue... I think 299? But I don't remember for sure.
