Relax! I really don't see any problem with this sort of discussion - From my perspective this isn't about overpowered/underpowered or anything like that, but merely value - somethings are very expensive, and worth every penny when they're needed, but somethings aren't neccesarily expensive while providing a lot of utility - like a pocket knife on a camping trip.

And if you really want to convince WOTC not to come out with version 4.0 - stop buying 3.5, stop talking about it (at all, not just "munchkin items" and crap like that whatever you think that means), stop playing it, and mostly just find another hobby. As long as people will buy it, they will come out with new things to sell - that's not evil, it's just business - they're a company, their whole point is to make money, of course they're going to do that. If you don't have anything constructive to add to the discussion, just leave it alone and please find another, more appropriate, thread to pollute with your paranoid rants!

If the DM is foolish enough to use the mundane building prices in the DMG, a Drawmij's Instant Fortress is incredibly good value... it costs the same as a regular tower! *sigh*

My pick is the necklace of adaptation. At 9000 gp, it's a steal.

How many people actually get to choose their magic items? In my game, there aren't any Ye Olde Magic Shoppes. You might be able to find a magesmith to craft something for you; I allow that pretty handily with weapons and armor, but more rarely with other things.

In the games I'm usually playing in - as player or DM - it usually varies greatly depending on the specifics of the world... Sometimes, like you said, there are no stores, maybe something individually crafted... in other games there's anything one could ever dream about available for purchase... for a price... most, though,are somewhere in between, somethings available for purchase (sometimes at list price, sometimes not) while other things must be crafted or simply can't be had. It all depends on the world the DM has crafted and the mood and setting he or she wants to imbue that particular world with.

And I agree with you about the Necklace of Adaptation. That and the Ring of Sustenance are usually the first magic items my character buys if able to do so. I find them extremely useful.

Phylactery of Faithfulness. Something every friggin Paladin needs. For less than 2k.

Dull Grey Ioun stones. At 25gp a pop, you can look like one bad mofo what with all the sattelites whizzing around your noggin.

Those two rods get much less use than they should... a Rog/Sorc could get so much handy use out of the silent spells, and what wizard doesn't want his charms, rope tricks, or summons to last twice as long? Seriously great rods... best value on the market.

As Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe pointed out, a Lyre of Building can break the game apart. A single bard with the lyre can create buildings worth tens of millions of gold. Train a small cadre of bards, and things get out of control.

Okay, this might not be what you are looking for, it's a little spendier than then the items listed above. I think the item that is a real steal is Daern's Instant Fortress. Let me see, I'm a high and powerful mage looking for a place to settle down and teach a few apprentices. I see this beautiful 3 story tower in an idyllic setting and question my DM, "How much for the tower?". A few flips through the DMG, hmmm... 50,000 gp. I spend then next couple days pondering whether to purchase the tower or not when a wizard shows me an interesting little trinket. A small metal cube one carries around that can expand into the same 3 story tower. With the added portability, add on adamantine walls and wizard locked doors. Maybe a few other bells and whistles (my books are packed up so I can't look for certain). How much for this wonderful artifact? 55,000 gp.

That's a pretty mighty upgrade for 5,000 gp. Sold.

+1 armor, +1 shield, at 1150 +x each this is a steal why bother with non-magic armor? getting it tailor made or buying openly should be a snap. you have to find a 5th level caster. Any place larger than a small town should have somebody who makes them. A large town will have a 5th+ cleric 66%, and 50% for a wiz or sorc.
Rings are rare in my world - how many 12th lvl casters who just hang bout making trinkets for cash are there?
As for pearls of power the 17th caster level should make these impossible to find. I use 8 +spell level caster requirement, and finding them is possible at least. If you read it as CL is not required then everyone and their mom should have one and pearls should be in huge demand- esp since you can use more than one.
