Magic Of Incarnum?

What are you guys' opinion on the MoI book and the rules presented within it? I quite like them myself, shaping the remnants of souls to give yourself bonuses. It's like spellcasting, but they're a constant effect rather than "Blam! You die!"

I want to like MOI but something is stopping from really using it. I can't quite pin down the cause. The soulmelds themselves seem interesting but when taken as a package (ie a class) it just doesn't work for me.

I like the idea behind the book as well, but I can tell why I won't use it: bound soul-melds take up item slots. So, an incarnum character's major class abilities preclude the use of lots of standard magic items.

Combining it with VoP on the other hand...

It's an interesting system that's grown on me over time. The main problem is that you basically have to read the entire book to understand what you can do with it, so it's a steep learning curve.

The system is cool, but every time I put pen to paper and try to design a PC around the Incarnate or Soulborn class, it comes out looking underpowered. Totemists seem to be closest to balanced, and even they seem a bit on the weak side.

It's on my list of systems to "re-write", throwing out the alignment silliness. :)

MoI is probably the coolest book... that I never use. As Nifft said above, all the classes are kinda weak. My "human torch" gestalt build uses Incarnate as support... its a fun build, but hardly OPed.

We, the EN-collective, await this Niffty-product :p

See, the class I like from the book is the Soulborn. Yes, the classes start off weaker than most other classes, but you can compensate for that quite well with the right melds. For instance, a number of the melds listed on the Soulborn meldshaping list grant immunities to various things, not to mention the Incarnum Defence class ability, which gives them immunity to something based off their alignment. LG=immune to fear, CG=immune to paralysis, LE=immunity to exhaustion, CE=immune any effect that would lower your strength
