Magic Of Incarnum?

Gah! It's late on Sunday and I have no counter-builds for y'all. Truth is I haven't had time to look at them all that much. Maybe tonight... :(

Hmm, so it'd be easy to make Incarnum villains, but very hard to make Incarnum PCs who could compete. Bleah.

The problem is that MoI includes a whole set of soulmelds (the necrocarnum ones) that Evil Incarnate and Soulborn characters can use without needing to spend a feat or anything else. With necrocarnum out of the equation, the book has 2 soulmelds with the Good descriptor, 2 with the Evil descriptor and NONE with neither Chaos or Law. If you don't take necrocarnum away, or make extra soulmelds to balance the remaining three alignments, the system is heavily balanced towards Evil.

Totemists in the other hand are equally effective no matter which alignment you take.

Just something roughly sketched out...assuming standard $$$ for a 9th level PC.

Lawful Good
Azurin
Fighter 2/Soulborn3/Kensai4
Str 14, Dex 18, Con 14, Int 13, Wis 12, Cha 10
AC 23 (+5 armor, +4 dex, +4 magic) Touch 18, Flatfooted 19
BAB +8/+3

Weapons: Any 2 handed weapon (lets assume 2Hd sword) with +3 enchantment (18K) + enhancements from the Kensai class- say either Corrosive+Flame+Frost+Shock enchantments or any two of those and Holy. 2d6 +2 (Str) +3 (Magic) 19-20x2S + a total of 4d6 from Kensai enhancements. (With Monkey Grip, the 2HD sword's base damage would be 3d6, and with the Heavy Weapon feat in addition, 4d6- see below.)

Armor: +2 Mithril Breastplate + Ring of Protection +1 + Amulet of Natural Armor +1
Skills: Minimum ranks of Concentration +5, Diplomacy +5, Ride +5
HP: 9d10+ Con Bonus

Possible Feats: WFoc. 2Hd Sword (this feat is a prereq for Kensai), Combat Expertise (this feat is a prereq for Kensai), Monkey Grip, Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave, Combat Reflexes. Take either Cobalt Critical or Sapphire Smite as the Soulborn's 3rd level bonus feat.

Other Feat options: If you want to spend the extra money ($7k, as I recall) for an extra D6 of damage, take the feat Heavy Weapon from Magic of Faerun and make the 2hd sword out of magically tempered gold or platinum- sub it for WFoc 2Hd Sword, or (WFoc is a prereq for Kensai) Combat Reflexes if your build doesn't have a good enough Dex to take it. Another good choice for this build is Deft Opportunist (+4 to AoO attack rolls). A slightly different version of this build had a few more feats, and used a Greatspear, which has reach, so was even better able to get use of the AoOs it had.

Take some of your dinero and buy Potions of Enlarge Person and Bull's Strength (assuming no caster has those handy). The Str bonuses from those 2 stack. Add in the Kensai's ability to boost his Str by +8 for short periods of time. Yes, it stacks too...for a grand total of +14 to Str. Popping up +7/+7 almost out of nowhere isn't too shabby.

Combined with using Power Attack and Combat Reflexes plus the Great Cleave plus an enormous, well-enchanted weapon & the occasional Smite means you'll be making a LOT of attacks and dispatching a LOT of opponents.

For further refinement, you could substitute Psychic Warrior for Fighter, essentially trading a point of BAB for gaining the Expansion power. That way you don't have to spend money on the Enlarge Person potions AND you get a better ability- Expansion can boost you 2 size classes- meaning you get another die added to your weapon's base damage more Str and more reach and area threatened so more AoOs getting triggered.
