Magic RPG

Some time ago, I ran across a text file that had a fairly simple set of rules for playing an RPG based on Magic the Gathering. I seem to have lost that file. Does anyone know where this can be found, or would have a copy they could e-mail me?

I guess whoever did that file one day heard the doorbell ring, went to answer it, and that's the last thing anyone ever saw of him.

The WotC (M:tG division) special forces are quite ruthless and as soon as anyone suggests making Magic an RPG, they strike.

Some of us speculated what happened to the poor sod. One guy thought that maybe they forced him to listen to the Pokemon series OST for 20 days straight. Another couple of guys deemed it possible that maybe actual mind flayers had a go at his brain. There were theories involving beholders or drow master torturers. There was something about only getting any food if he could quote whole Magic Card texts verbatim - from any edition, without apparent pattern.

Personally, I guess it was much, much worse.

It wasn't called Dusk, was it? That was a campaign setting originally based on Magic's magic system. As far as I recall, Wizards went down on it and the setting had to be de-Magicised.

There actually were some internal attempts to do a Magic RPG or campaign setting, but it was always sabotaged from within so as not to "dilute the brands".

A pity, really. I'd wager that this could be the next coup they land, to get huge numbers of people into D&D (the last was d20).

I located it. its on the page for the Magic Online Players Club, where you can also find the Manalink patch for the old Microprose computer game that lets you connect to someone else using a TCP/IP connection. It looks fairly homebrew-ish and now that I look at it again, not that great. Oh well :)

oh, sorry for the reply earlier..it didn't come out as humorous looking as I intended, and I don't want you think I was being snarky :)

Actually, he is not far off. Back in the day, I was a playtester for "Manastorm", the RPG based on M:TG from WOTC. While it had some interesting ideas (a "manadeck" used to power spells, etc), it had many large problems. As this was before the WOTC takeover of TSR, we put a lot of time and effort into the game, and reported both the warts and good parts of the game. We were then told the project was put on hold. The WOTC bought out TSR and the projest disappeared.

I was cleaning out some boxes of old gaming stuff one day, and found the rules and all of my old notes. SOme folks on RPG.Net expressed an interest in seeing it, so I wrote WOTC and asked about the NDA I had signed those...what, 15 years ago? I was IMMEDIATELY sent a letter stating in no uncertain terms that the NDA was still in effect, and not to show anyone anything.

So, apparantly it is a no-no to discuss anything about even the deadest of games. Too bad..one of my Gurps players is HUGE into M:TG. Judges statewide competitions too. Oh well...

I, uh, i kninda made up houserules for it...

It was almost 40 pages long when I finally realized i was no game designer, and lots of cards violated my perception of the game, in the end, i scrapped the whole stupid thing.
