Magic the Gathering: the movie in developement

Could be good, will probably be awful. I can already hear the Opening Narration Info Dump dropping a steaming pile of "WTF?" onto the audience. I would love to see movies set in Dominaria and the other MTG planes, but so much can go wrong especially since Planeswalkers will probably be the make or break element.

I see one of three things happening:

a) A full-on CGI extravaganza featuring the major players in the M:tG universe. It's been forever since I've played, but some guy has an airship and it's a plane-hopper, I think? It will be chock full of sfx and have many key spells, lands, artifacts and monsters and someone will inevitably be "the villain"... maybe the five colors will be threatened by some gob-awful World-Crusher.

b) A Yu-Gi-Oh style animated adventure where the cards are 'real' and it's up to a group of kids or young adults or something to prevent some big bad from tearing the rift between dimensions and causing hell on regular Earth.

c) And what they'll probably do - a live-action adventure starring little kids who learn about M:tG from their mother/father who used to be a tournament champ but doesn't play anymore because they know The Game Is Real and want to protect their three kids. Then some kid becomes a prodigy (probably the youngest), learn The Truth, gets snapped up by The Big Bad to exploit and its up to the rest of the family to throw down, traverse the Planes, save the kid and win one for Truth and Justice. (See, each member of the family represents one of the 5 colors...)

And that's just a few minutes of revelation.

Think they will try casting Johnny Depp as Gerrard Capashen?

Weatherlight did feel modestly cinematic, so yeah I could see that working.

I mean if FOX REALLY comes out swinging with movies, tie in TV series (re-using the movie's assets so it looks halfway decent), an animated TV series, an animated direct to video anthology (Halo Legends / Animatrix ) and maybe a mini series, this could work.

The whole arc starting from the Weatherlight to Apocalypse was the high points of MtG's stories. Phyrexians make great enemies. But this is old already.

I'm pretty sure it will center around modern planewalkers and Jace and Chandra will be the main protagonists and Bolas the ultimate antagonist, like Thanos in the Avenger flick.

Rich setting to pull material from but card game to movie, not so sure. Yes, you can use the stuff from the books but are the books on the level of other franchises, to be a draw to a movie crowd? Just think, it will not work.

I don't know, could be good. Then again, Dnd the movie COULD have been good too. So much material to take things from... lots of great ideas for a M:tG movie... depends on what they do with it.

I've also always wanted a dnd campaign setting based on the M:tG world.

Probably a lot closer to DragonBall Evolution.

I'm pretty that is what will happen to Akira.
