I don't understand the reluctance to make a magic spell or oil that confers the properties of cold iron to a weapon. Cold iron may be somewhat magic resistant but it can still be enchanted magically as described in its write-up in the DMG. The metalline magic weapon enchantment in the FR Underdark book can, likewise, magically transform a weapon into cold iron (as well as silver and adamtantite) as often as needed. I can understand that magically duplicating the properties of cold iron may be more difficult/expensive/time consuming than the efforts necessary to duplicate the properties of silver, but to say that it is impossible seems rather strange to me. Magic can do anything, including contradictory things like negating itself (as with a dispel magic or anti-magic sphere spells). If may require a higher level spell than transforming a weapon into silver would, but I can't imagine that it's simply impossible.
A Potion of Silver Claws (BoED 107) costing 50 gp would grant all of a creature's natural attacks the properties of silver for 1 minute. Assuming that a similar potion *could* be made to mimic the effects of cold iron, how much should it cost?
