Magical Detective

I am thinking of creating a character similar to Harry Dresden and John Constatine for a campaign that we are and was wandering what be a good class. Could a Warlock do a good job as an arcane detective even if dipped in another class for 1 level?

I don't think a Warlock will help much on the "detective" end of it.

I'd recommend a psion Seer. They get Gather Information, Listen, and Spot on their class skill list in addition to all Knowledges. Many of their low level powers are incredibly useful for information gathering. Check out Clairvoyant Sense, Object Reading, and Sensitivity to Psychic Impressions.

Take a couple of blast style powers to round yourself out for combat, and you've got a strong and useful character.

Personally, I think an artficer (Eberron Campaign Setting) makes an excellent magical detective. The ability to use any spell of 4th level or lower (see the Spell Storing Item infusion) makes you incredibly good at utility magic and digging up information.

A Beguiler would, I think, be best.

Warlock is doable if you dedicate invocations to detection and knowledge stuff, but they get few skill points.
