Magical weapons that power up on crits

I just had what I think is a cool idea...

A tiny +1 dagger, doing only 1d4+1 damage. However, it has a 17-20 crit range, but no bonus damage.

Against opponents immune to criticals, you still resolve the critical as usual. They take regular damage, but you still get to power up.

The first time you critical, the weapon becomes keen. After that, it starts gaining more abilities every time you critical. Higher enhancement bonus, flaming/frost/shocking, etc. A schedule would be worked out on a per-weapon basis.

If you want 3 rounds without hitting an opponent, it would power down.

Call the weapon quality "malicious" or "bloodthirsty" (although in the latter case it's a bit of a misnomer since it still works on things without, y'know, blood)

Cool idea. Maybe have it steal magical abilities as it goes, too.

Each crit will grant the weapon a +1 enhancement bonus (stacks with itself, goes up to +5), and will also do one of the following:

  • Reduce SR by 2
  • Reduce energy resistance by 10
  • Steal one magical effect (e.g. mage armor) currently affecting the target

This is only fair if you don't allow the Spellthief in your campaign. ;)
