maintaining secrecy ?

How do you guard against scrying ? Is it possible to effectively kidnap someone given that scrying is an easy, no-risk solution ?

Non-detection is a partial solution only, especially considering it’s duration. Sure you could extend it, but even then it requires continuous upkeep.

Forbiddance guards against the entry of rescuers but it still allows them to divine where the victim is. Help.

There are a couple of solutions.

1. A non-detection item

2. Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum, which lasts 24 hours and (I believe) is in Tome & Blood

3. Detect Scrying lasts 24 hours; when a sensor is detected, it then can be dispelled

4. I think Monte Cool's Book of Eldritch Might III has some anti-scrying spells.

BOEMI had static veil, which adds your caster level (or some fraction based on it) to scrying DCs within an area of effect.

Thanks for your replies.

I take it that the consensus is that you've got be pretty high level and/or spend a non-negligable amount of gp's ?

I was really hoping for a cheap(er) and/or mid level solution, but apperently scrying is a major force to be reckoned with.

IIRC, scrying something not on your plane is quite difficult.
So you can put the victim in any extra dimensional pocket (rope trick, portable hole, ...)
Of course you have to ensure that the victim have sufficient air to breathe...
Do not forget that attempting to scry 24h/24 is prohibitive except for very large organizations.
So, all you have to do is putting the victim in a portable hole when moving, and using extended ropetrick when not :)
I'm not sure about the rule specifics, but this would work IMC.

If I were kidnapping someone, I'd lock them in a square, featureless cell and cast Deeper Darkness in the room. Since the only vision spell that can be cast through a Scrying is Darkvision, and darkvision doesn't penetrate magical darkness, all they'll get to see is solid blackness. Since you need to see a location in order to teleport there, the rescuers aren't going anywhere.

And Deeper Darkness lasts days per level.

So there you go, a counter to scrying for the price of a 3rd-level spell. :D

Put them inside a box. A very small box. A box with no room except for the kidnap victim.

Let the other guys scry all they want. >8)

Scrying character: "I see the princess ... she's in a box."

Other characters: "Great! Where's the box?"

Scrying character: "I have no clue, all I see is the INSIDE of the box. It's the inside of an ORDINARY box, like tens of thousands of other boxes in use throughout the Twenty Kingdoms. She could be literally ANYwhere ... "

Other characters: "D'OH!"

With some of the spells from BOEM3, one can detect the scrying sensor, use it to home in on the Scryer's location, and zap him for 1d4/lvl dmg. Oh, and you'll disrupt the sensor too.
