Major computer problem; need help please

First Post
When I try to use windows update or install anything made by microsoft on my computer, I get a message that it has not passed windows logo testing and won't be installed. It was funny the first time, but I'm getting very frustrated now. I know something's in my pc, but I can't find it. Does anyone out there know what I might be dealing with and what I can do to get rid of it?

Does this happen on IE6 SP1?

If so, you may have installed a security update (KB823559 security patch) that needs to be installed after IE6 SP1. If this is the case, remove the security update in Add/Remove Programs.

Other reasons could be (try these in order and test each one before continuing to the next)

Corrupt log file:
Start -> Run "ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\edb.log *.tst
Try again.

Cryptographic Services are disabled (XP only):
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Right click on Cryptographic Services and go to Properties
Set Startup type to Automatic and click Start

Something else corrupted in the system catalogue:
Start -> Run "cmd"
Each of the following lines should be run:
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
exit

DLL Registration went bad:
Start -> Run "cmd"
Type in "regsvr32 /u X" where X is each of the following:
- softpub.dll
- wintrust.dll
- initpki.dll
- dssenh.dll
- rsaenh.dll
- gpkcsp.dll
- sccbase.dll (XP only)
- slbcsp.dll
- mssip32.dll
- cryptdlg.dll
(hit OK on any boxes that pop up)
restart you computer
Start -> Run "cmd" again
Type in "regsvr32 X" where X is each of those previous .dll files.

System directory has hidden attribute set:
Start -> Run "cmd"
Type each of the following:
attrib -s -h %windir%
attrib -s -h %windir%\system32
attrib -s -h %windir%\system32\catroot2
exit

Workaround:
Start -> Run "regedit"
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Non-Driver Signing
right-click Policy and go to Modify
Change the 02 to 00
hit OK

Come back if none of these work. There are more things to try, but they are all a whole lot more complicated and prone to causing problems.

I had something similar happen tome when I installed SP1. It ended up being a conflict with my Norton suite. I eventually uninstalled Norton and went back to ZoneAlarm and everything worked fine. I'm not sure if you've even got Norton (or any other firewall/anti-virus), but it's a thought.

Before you try reanjr's stuff, check this:

Right click on My computer, choose properties. Click on the hardware Tab. Click on the "Driver Signing" button. Make sure that "Block" is not selected. I recommend ignore - the whole driver signing thing is bull from M$ so they can charge money from hardware developers.

(This is actually the same as reanjr's last step, but this is the non-scary way to do it.)

That fixed it. Thank you very much. :)
