What kind of sorceror? Race? Choice of spells? Type of campaign? etc...
What do you mean, "useful for a 5th level sorcerer"? Can I make a Rainbow Butterfly's Amulet of Infinite Wishes? What's the gold limit? etc.

Let's see: lvl 5 PC has 9,000 GP in total assests, so :

AMULET of POWER: When worn by any spellcaster, this amulet grants the ability to cast one additional spell of each level, once/day. The spells must be memorized, as any other spell the spellcaster is capable of using, and is likewise limited to those known.
To make it LESS powerful, you can make it an "Amulet of Sorcerous Power", which only works for Sorcerors, or even an "Elven Amulet of Sorcerous Power", which only works for Elves who also happen to have Sorcery, or whatever...

Based on the way it looks I imagine it turing the user into a butterfly, or providing clairvoyance or maybe arcane eye.
Perhaps it summons butterflys that scout for the wearer.
Perhaps it is a talisman of transmutation and extends the duration of any 1st-3rd level transmutation spell the wearer casts.
Perhaps it allows the wearer to see into another dimension, thus gaining bonuses against ethereal creatures.
Maybe it allows the wearer to fly with a base speed equal to twice their land speed.
Maybe 1/day it can be commanded to create a scintillating or hypnotic effect.
Maybe it increses the DC of any Mind-Affecting spell the wearer casts.
Maybe it grants a bonus to Charisma (it is very pretty)
Perhaps is grants darkvision, or see invisibility.
Maybe it is an artifact and does all this and more!
