A neat twist to the character would be that he doesn't think he has any supernatural powers, just a simple mercenary. But every once in a while a divine rage would come over him and he burns with radiant energy (i.e. all the avenger powers).
Another persona would come online at that point and control his actions. Afterwards, he comes back to consciousness with no memory of what just happened.
That way you get to RP two distinct personalities for the character, the "real" character and the voice in his head.
