Male player + female character: a new twist

Ya, I can see that. In this case, I thought the player would handle it well. If he started to not handle it well, I would have cut it off quick. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. :)
Yeah, it's all about the players, IMO. I'd totally not have a problem with your concept and my current group. I'd not have a problem with even weirder concepts and my group.

But that's my current group. I can very easily imagine groups where it got out of hand really quick.

The first PC is a guy with some plot hooks that have forced his PC to "hide out" it's got a "Some Like it Hot" or "Robotech: TNG - Lancer/Yellow Dancer" kind of vibe to it. Bit of a classic really.
I've been mulling over this for a while... I totally need to watch Some Like it Hot again. That's a great movie. :D

At the risk of trying to do oneupmanship, I can do one better.

Female player. Playing a male. Said male was dressed up like a woman.
Male player Playing a female. In disguse as a male.

Said characters fall in love.

And then get their genders switched.

I hear you. I've done the same thing on several occasions.

Didn't work out for me :\

I'm not denying your experiences could be different.

Isn't that the plot of an anime?

I have had two long-term female PCs. The first was devoutly Christian and her personality was focused on helping people, not on the fact that she was a woman. The second was a skittish woman who was a mix of Lina Inverse and a girl I was good friends with in high school; the kind of person who'd point at a spider, cringe, and tell the other people in the room to kill it for her.

The only strange male as female PC I encountered was in a game where the humans had tried to commit genocide by hunting down and killing 90% of the female elves in the world. One player wanted to play a female half-elf for the sake of the social stigma, which I thought would lead to some nice tension and conflict in the party. But her personality was heavily influenced by a desire to hide who she was, so she pretended to be a male human. And she didn't talk to the other PCs much, so really I just ended up with a player playing a boring fighter.

Sounds like Shakespeare.

I've thought about a female character who posed as a man to flee from gender expectations (her family or even whole culture looking down on female adventurers). Basically, the opposite of JD's idea.

Would someone like TB or fusangite have a problem with that?

My longest-running PC is a female. I am not. When it comes to running female PC's, though, they're pretty much male PC's with female bodies. There have been a few times when her gender has influenced her roleplaying, but nothing very serious or interesting.

I find it much easier to DM/roleplay a woman than play/roleplay a woman. I have no idea why. I'm pretty comfortable roleplaying flirtation and so on between male PC's and female NPC's, but anything beyond that goes off-camera very quickly.

One of the hazards of the game I suppose. :)
