Mapping, tiles, boards, dungeons, cities

If you beat me to making it and making money off of it no problem, because I might just buy some of yours!

:) That's OK, I'm not thinking about doing anything like this myself (as I'm happy doing what I already do - i.e. making any tiles I draw available on my website for free), I just did the above mock-up out of some of my existing stuff - just because I wanted to make sure I was understanding you right.

As I say, I'd probably buy something like what you have proposed if I saw it in the FLGS (or the online version thereof), simply because I'm a sucker for this kind of thing :)

However, if someone wanted to arrange a few rooms/passages that share the same wall ...something like this for example:

then they are either going to have to draw the walls onto the tile itself (reducing its 'reusability' - though if they're cheap enough who'd really care :) ), or maybe have different colour 'floor sheets' to represent the separate rooms (with some kind of doorway marker to represent the entrance/exits).

But I'm just thinking out aloud here :)

something like this for example:

Lets take you rooms for example. There are a few of them here. The idea would be not to make them that developed or even add the outskirts of the cavern that you cannot normally access, but just make the rooms.

If you don't mind I will attempt to work with your example here and chop it up to try to explain better, and repost the idea here. If with your permission to use it as a further example and to alter your artwork.

Sorry, I think I've probably only managed to confuse matters by adding the pictures (instead of them better explaining what I mean) :(

I was kinda using that picture as an example of what you might find in a module... and then you would have to try and recreate that with a paper battlemap...

...like this perhaps (i.e. drawing the walls in)

or by using different style/colour tiles taped/glued in place

(but then needing some kind of door token or miniature)

And yeah, if you want to quickly cut some of these pictures up to better explain your idea then go ahead. Actually, here's is a small 8x11 square image to play around with if you like:

Well basically just take the above rooms and you would have them able to be cut out in the grid lin to match to other rooms of any wall type. That is what I was going to do.

so either you could have wall spaces to add walls anywhere or have single rooms and not created roomsets. It just use a room set as you have done above, and cut along any grid line or anywhere else you want, like the previous sand spilling into the tavern idea where you cut an odd shape rather than follow along the grid lines to have two tiles offer both terrain types at once.

It isn't exactly all planned out yet you see. ;)

:D ...so hopefully some of my comments haven't been totally useless. I just thought I'd offer up some of my own thoughts for your consideration, as (as you may have seen) I've had to comprimise the flexability of my own tiles in order to incorporate the walls into the design :(

Oh heavens no! All comments are welcome as that is the purpose of the thread. Would people use/want the thing, and what would they want to see out of it.

The walls issue is one I wasn't going to bother with at first and try my hand at making just plain tiles to begin with and worry with the buildings later as they would be things you really needed to get right or be able to cut up right to form other things. Thus the idea of having table tiles so you could put things where you want them rather than having immovable tables in a tavern.

I am going to keep taking in these ideas, as the thread moves along and see what I can come up with and make some mockups of tiles in basic forms and go from there.

I currently have a few ideas for walls, but with nothing actually drawn (can't draw a straight line without a line drawing tool) yet to show as an example.

I may take a few of your tiles and try something to get opinions with from everyone watching this thread and see what I can come up with since my tiles won't NEED to be rectangles and squares but can be cut into any polygon imaginable. ;)
