This has been done to death (the first part at least)

Most publishers are either using Quark XPress (like myself) or Adobe Indesign. A few are still using Adobe Pagemaker, but they are a distinct minority.

As for mapping software... I haven't a bloody clue.

is Quark XPress, an item one could get from a normal software retail store or is it a specialty item.....and what is the cost of the product Hellhound?

*ps....thanks for the info:D

I use Adobe InDesign 2.0. I bought version 1.5 on sale then bought the upgrade. This saved a lot of money instead of buying the full version of Adobe InDesign 2.0 which was around 600 dollars or so.

You can also use Word2000 for doing the layouts, then buy Adobe Acrobat 5.0 for turning it into a pdf.

Quark

I've been using Quark for about 8 years now and have to say that it's absolutely necessary to publishing. Before that I used PageMaker but found it difficult to use for anything but ugly work.

Now, a lot of my opinions have to do with my skill level between then and now.

What I recommend is searching ebay for Quark 3.31 or so. You don't have to use 4 and you should find 3.31 at a decent price.

The reality is that Quark XPress is the single most used publishing software for professional publishing. Thus the crazy price tag. All the papers and print houses I've come in contact with within 200 km of where I live use Quark.

I actually use Word 97 for layout but then I've been using Word in one for or another since Word for DOS 3.0 (It came out in 1986) so I know all the tricks. I also don't believe in background images in a PDF. If I did, I wouldn't use Word. And I use Aladdin Ghostscript for my distiller. It works and that's all I need from it. I have an old copy of Photoshop 4.0 that I use for preping artwork.

As for cartography, I have cc2 but haven't tried to make a real map in it yet. I have a module coming out soon though so I guess I will find out about it one way or another.
