Marbles.

Hello and help me if you can.

Has anybody ever seen a rule or come up with a house rule on how long one bag of marbles when placed in a 5 foot square actually stay in that square thus affecting creatures moving through it? The point is that marbles should not according to physics stay in one place when people are skidding and slipping on them and at some point the marbles end up outside of the initial square ending their effect.

Any ideas, anyone?

You might be looking for house rules, but you could try having the marbles 'dissipate' after a few time people step through. But, depending on the ground, the marbles wouldn't necessarily bounce too far. A bunch of marbles don't realistically fill up an entire five-foot square, either, so just because a few bounce or skid doesn't mean they're out of the square.

You could just have the balance DC drop by 2 each round. If you're using a reflex save (not as good a choice, in my opinion, because I like encouraging PCs to take balance) you could also have the save DC drop steadily.

I'll leave this in rules for now, in case there's an official answer.

btw: what are the regular rules for marbles. I don't see them in the SRD.
I didn't check, but I don't think there are any. You could try to run them like caltrops or some hazardous terrain if you wanted a rules-equivalent.

According to A&EG, one bag of marbles (about two dozen) covers an area 5' square; creatures moving or fighting in that square must make a DC15 Balance check, or cannot move for one round (and may fall - see Balance skill for details).

Yes, the original question originated from here, but how many creatures can move through the square before the marbles get kicked away so to speak.

The FRCS doesn't mention the answer to your question either. Personally I think PirateCat's mechanic would work well, reducing the save or DC by 2 each round.
