Margaret Weiss gets Marvel license

And, as I pointed out, in games like the Star Wars RPG, while you play in the universe, it isn't expected you'll be playing Han & Luke, nor will you likely actually face Darth Vader.

Yes, but honestly, there are only a handful of movie-canon characters to play in Star Wars. Marvel and DC have dozens to hundreds of canon characters to play.

While they've included rules for making your own, those rulse have alway struck me as weak or poorly supported.

How so?

I think in my youth I ran Secret Wars once, and the players were the Marvel heroes. Otherwise, I've never run supers game with published characters as PCs. And the good ones never struck me as weak or poorly supported.

The one thing that has always somewhat bothered me about Marvel (and DC) RPGs is that they seem to push using their heroes instead of your own*. While they've included rules for making your own, those rulse have alway struck me as weak or poorly supported.

*Compared to, say, Star Wars, where its clear the movie characters are for cameos or "show".

When I played Marvel Superheroes in the 80's we exclusively played our own characters. Our histories were linked with Marvel IP, but our characters were distinctly ours. I thought MSH did a good job of supporting characters.

This was my experience with both the 80's version and the card based one.
edit: Actually, my campaign, was, initially, its own corner of the universe with the linkage coming from the occasional guest appearance. The exceptions being a character idolizing Iron Man as part of his background. Later campaign events led to connections with SHIELD, the West Coast Avengers, and the X-men as well as very close friendships with the original New Mutants.

Unfortunately...

That's why I do prefer games like Mutants an Masterminds or Villians and Vigilantes. And, as I pointed out, in games like the Star Wars RPG, while you play in the universe, it isn't expected you'll be playing Han & Luke, nor will you likely actually face Darth Vader.

Unfortunately for me thats happened especially as my dm feels he has to change canon to suit how he feels the game should go ignoring the fact you don't even have to do that.

So the game that started with west end games first star wars release moved onto its 2nd but we didn't change to d20 when that was released probably just as well as some of us tried to convert our characters over and my tongue-tied engineer wouldn't even pass 2nd level!

Still annoyed that he had my character turn jedi even though I was the only one to be force sensitive, still pulled the villa moment by dismantling the prison cell after learning darth vader was coming!
Stunned Luke who had now turned to the dark side at the end of empire's instead of canon... and had vader chuck our former spaceship at us as we filched his personal shuttle rather than waste time heading to the one Luke had just cut the landing platform off of!

Only problem is we used to change dm's so when I ran games I usually had my character be absent often for game reasons then when he rejoined I didn't bother granting him extra abilities the main dm is more or less the same as far as I can see but the former gambler turned jedi master however...

Currently trapped in another universe stuck aboard a star destroyer disguised as a tech assigned to one of the Emperor's agents with the Daleks and the Cybermen getting involved!

Sorry long winded way of saying never say never!
