Market Research and Starting RPG Company

I am thinking of starting an RPG publishing company. This is a long term project that I do not want to rush into, so I need to do market research and develope a viable business plan before taking the plunge. Does anyone have advice on how to do effective market research, and where I can find good data on the RPG industry? Also looking for any general advice on things to expect and avoid from people who have been down this road.
