I know, I saw that. I can't say that I'm pleased. By rules as written, the swordmage hand jive works, even if its still dumber than dirt and undoubtedly not the intention of the designers (its too big an issue to be intentionally hidden away as much as it is). Too bad that WOTC almost never erratas this sort of thing. It also makes my dreams for a versatile weapon fighter build much more difficult. Instead of having two "modes" that you switch between round by round, thereby creating interesting choices and consequences, you will be able to get the benefits of whichever mode you need whenever you need it. Benefits could still be assigned so that wielding only a versatile weapon was a worthwhile choice, and powers could still be themed to represent attacking with one hand free or with a two handed weapon, as necessary to make the class interesting. But there's less room for creative design than there otherwise would have been. A versatile weapon fighter build could be created at this point with only the following: 1. Bonuses to fix weapon damage and/or ac, a la the tempest fighter. 2. Some plan for the mechanical "theme" of fighting with a free hand. I would pick grabbing. 3. One at will themed to represent having a free hand. 4. An encounter power at levels 7, 17, and 27, available only to the versatile fighter (so that you could pick up weapon themed powers at 3, 13, and 23) that matched the chosen theme. That would cover it, honestly. One mathematical adjustment, and four powers, and you're done. I guess I could write that up myself. Give me a bit.
