The Small City of Marzen

The small city of Marzen in Mittendein lies in the northern region of the realm, on the eastern shores of Lake Valdorane. It is an area of low rolling hills and lightly forested here and there. Marzen has no city walls, just an identifiable city center at the docks area - small docks, suitable for the heavy traffic of light ships that ply the vast expanse of the lake. The city spreads out from there, and becomes more sparse as one moves away from the center. Marzen is unique among Mittendeinish cities in that it does not have the massive walls and many towers, infused with Dwarven designs and architecture, which can be found at each of the other Mittendeinish cities. There is, however, a very large military fort with clear Dwarven architecture. With this castle, Mittendein is able to dominate the surrounding countryside.

Marzen (small city)
AL NG; 15,000 GP limit; Assets 6,375,000 gp; Population 8,525; Mixed (human 7,300, Halfling 500, Dwarf 350, Elf 275, Gnome 50).
Authority Figures: Conventional (LN) Baron Karl von Banner, male Nob4/War3 (Ruler of Marzen); Conventional (LG) Mayor Gerhard Seigell, male Exp3/Nob1 (Elected Mayor)
Important NPCs: Kolia, female Dwarf Clr2/Exp3 ("Fiery Axe Tavern" barkeep);

Politics: The area is nominally ruled by the Baron Karl von Banner, a third cousin once removed of Kaiser Holfdem, but the aging Baron, concerned more with military arrangements and organizing scouts against the orcs that can still be found in the north, appoints a mayor to see to the day-to-day business of the city. The appointment is reviewed every three years, and has been held by Gerhard Seigel since Summer 62.

Tavern Name: Fiery Axe
The Fiery Axe Tavern is an average tavern and inn, situated within easy walking distance of the docks areas but far enough away to avoid being full of sailors and other rough types.

Accommodations: Common (a placed on a raised, heated floor, blanket and pillow, amongst higher-class company) for 3 sp/day

Typical Menu:
# Breakfast: Basilisk tail, Goose eggs, Curds, Peach, Mush (cost 3sp).
# Lunch: Chicken half, Chicken eggs, Collard greens, Pear (cost 4sp).
# Supper: Pork liver, Broccoli, Collard greens, Mush, Raisin pie (cost 5sp).
# Snack: Curds, Dates, Mush (cost 2sp).

Bartender/Tavern Owner: Female dwarf, Clr2 (Galvar)/Exp3, who goes by the name Kolia. She is indifferent to all customers at first, except Goblinoids, whom she dislikes, but will serve so long as they appear not to be a threat and behave properly. She also feels most adventurers are a bit foolish, but takes a "to each their own" attitude about it. Kolia has a very pronounced strawberry birthmark on her neck, which flushes when she is angry. She also does not drink at all, and when asked about this she simply ignores the question. No one seems to know for sure why she doesn't drink at all. Kolia appears to be 100 years old, or early 20's in Human terms. She dreams of upgrading the Fiery Axe to a higher standard of quality, but so far has not been able to make enough money to do so. Towards this end, she will cast level 1 cleric spells at full price, if asked.

Merchant Name: The Ink and Parchment
The Ink and Parchment is Marzen's public magic shop, specializing in scrolls. but is as much a book shop as a magic shop. There are a couple of sages about.

It provides a number of important services for adventurers, including a discrete place to unload loot, but is rumored that the proprietor has butted heads with Mayor Seigell, and the Mayor's men are often found conspicuously nearby. So far nothing has been confiscated, but the Ink and Parchment hesitates to deal in Major Wondrous Items or weapons of any type (but not completely opposed to the idea...)

Walden Family

The Waldens are a noble family of eastern Mittendein. After a vendetta killed many of their members, the family's fortunes are waning, though in Solinburg they remain a dominant faction. Based out of Walden Manor in Solinburg, Lord Walden supervises his family's merchant operations, which stretch across the great Lake Valdoran as well as throughout the eastern reaches of Mittendein.

Brenheim Walden - heir and last surviving member of the Marzen faction of the family, he stayed with Lord Walden for safety while the family was being killed one by one. His survival has helped ensure that the family may yet rebound from its recent setbacks.
