Masks of Living Flesh

A wonderful magic item (creature?) from Ed Greenwood (link).

This is exactly the kind of magic items that I miss in 4ed. And while I'm happy to see something from the great Ed, it's a bit sad that this item comes from the "old guard".
Magic should feel "magical" and 4ed items usually look like a list of spare parts. Here we have no crunch at all but a lot of options for both players and DM.

Once again a big "Thanks!" to Ed Greenwood for everything he did for this game.

Interesting. This was fun and evocative, but I confess having -some- crunch might have been nice. In this case, since it's something of a legend, I could see presenting the Masks mechanically in three different ways -- as a monster (an NPC controlled by "his" mask), as a minor artifact, and as a monster/trap which pretends to be an item of "treasure" but is, in fact, quite deadly.
