Mass harm

I was reading the spell called mass(spell name) it says that it simply takes a spell and increases the range. But does this increase the spell slots needed to cast it? I know it does for bulls strength and bears endurance, but what about heal, harm, and slay living?

There is no spell called Mass (Spell Name). That is merely a description of what the Mass qualifier does for spells, but it is not an actual spell in and of itself.

A Mass version of a spell increases both the range and the number of targets.

And tmk, there is no Mass Harm or Mass Slay Living.

Mass Heal is level 9 whereas Heal is typically level 6.

Just a stray thought...

If someone were to have a Mass Harm spell, and since Mass Heal puts it at a level 9 spell, its fair to assume that a Mass Harm would also be level 9.

Now, Harm in and of its self is a very brutal spell, so a Mass harm would be pretty much an encounter killer.

While I can see the use of encounter killing spells, once you can cast level 9 spells, isnt it just easier to use Wish / Miracle instead?

WotC has not put out a metamagic feat called "Mass Spell" or, to my knowledge, a spell called "Mass Harm." There is another harm spell, I believe in Heroes of Horror?, but it isn't a mass spell.

Furthermore, just because Mass Heal exists, does not necessarily mean Mass Harm should as well. From my perspective, it would be too powerful. It's an arguable point, but not necessarily a popular one. Take that for what you will.

The general consensus from those that have houseruled a "Mass Spell" feat, is that it would require a spell level adjustment of at least +4. Truth is, depending upon the spell, it's such a highly variable thing that the closest metamagic feat is the much more limited "chain spell" feat.

I could see a new edition having each spell labeled with metamagic adjustments particular to each spell. It could be much more time consuming to design spells for such a system however and would require all metamagic feats to be implemented at the beginning of creation or have really substantial web support as new metamagic feats came out in supplements.

The closest thing to Mass Slay Living is Weird. I think they did that for a reason. Mass Harm would be somewhat terrifying unless it's range was really small.

The mass harm in HoH is based on greater harm from the same book (1d12/level, max of 20d12, all creatures except the caster within 20 ft)...so it's not exactly like one might think.

Mass heal already kicks the crap out of big undead things, but I think that a true reverse of the spell would be rather silly.

...Come to think of it, the HoH version of mass harm might be just the thing for the dread necromancer to drop when his undead pals get hurt by those annoying adventurers. :]
