Which of these seven films will get an Oscar nomination for visual effects? Vote for 3.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the seven films being considered for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 76th Academy Awards. The films up for the award are The Hulk, X2: X-Men United, "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," "Peter Pan" and "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines".

Apparently the Academy didn't think much about the groundbreaking effects in "The Matrix" sequels - doh! Anyways, we've got two superhero films to cheer on and the rest of the competition are excellent films as well.

I never knew how they did the nominations for this category (and I always wondered why there are only three nominees). But the superherohype.com sight explains that 15 minute clips of 7 potential nominees are shown at a special screening; from that group, three are picked as Oscar nominees.

Seems to be implying that the two superhero films were excellent films. I think the "as well" might be a bit of an overstatement...

Well, he's half right, I think. X2 was a great comic book movie.

Hulk, however, was the (slow) 2.5-hour introduction to a movie we still haven't seen.

That, as with any awards show prize, is the subjective call of the judge. One man's treasure is another man's trash, and all that.

Well, it was a Super Hero site the article appeared on. I think they praise every super hero film/tv show....and "other stuff" can be good, too.

Visuals to LotR, it was a visual movie, grand battles, epic backdrops, amazing landscapes. No movie has done more for tourism.

Yeah, best visual to LotR. It deserves it because (a) it looks really good and cinematic, and (b) it has made a genuine contribution to visual effects, done stuff that no-one had done before and extends the type of films which can be made.

It's hard to see on what basis a judgement will be made though; will it be just what "looks cool"? I think the Matrix missed out because lots of the stuff is there isn't an obvious special effects, in the way that CGI creatures and huge battles are. It didn't deserve to miss out.
