It is assumed that wizards cast their spells on matrixes - it does not impact on the rules, just explains in a little more detail how a spell is prepared.
This is a streamlined version of previous rules I posted here and that I modified to take the comments into account; you feedback is welcome, even if it is just to say you hate these rules (but tell me what's wrong!).
Matrix spell casting, as the name suggests, uses a mystical matrix to serve as a base structure and foundation to build the spell. The structure must be more sturdy to support a higher level spell, but all matrices for the same spell level are equivalent. No spellbook is required to create a matrix. Constructing the matrix takes time according to the maximum spell level it can receive and the skill of the spell caster.
After the matrix has been built, the spell caster cast his spell by following the procedure outlined in his spell book and leaving some lynchpins blank to be completed when the spell is fired off.
That is what is commonly called 'preparing spells'.
Base spell preparation time (BSPT) is a figure used in the following rules: it depends on the spell total level (including base level and metamagic feats) and the caster level; it is 5+spell level-half the caster level (round up).
Suspend matrix
Prerequisite: must be able to prepare arcane spells.
Benefit: during the preparation of your daily spells, you can leave some 'blank' matrices instead of preparing the spells completely. You can add a spell on a matrix later in the course of the day: it takes BSPT minutes (at least 1).
Note that it is not the same as leaving a slot completely blank.
Clean matrix
Prerequisite: Suspend Matrix feat.
Benefit: You can transform one of your available spell into a matrix of the same level as a full round action. However, you must make a spell caster level check at DC10+2*spell level or both the prepared spell and the matrix are lost.
Improve spell
Prerequisite: Suspend Matrix feat.
Benefit: You can modify one of your available spell with metamagic feats, provided that the spell was prepared in a slot level greater than the spell level; the modified spell level must not be greater than the slot level. It takes only one minute per additional level to do so. However, you must make a spell caster level check at DC10+2*spell level or both the prepared spell and the matrix are lost.

Prerequisite: Suspend Matrix feat.
Benefit: You can create a empty matrix occupying a slot you have already used up. Since it occurs outside of your normal spell preparation period and you are not properly prepared mentally, it can be longer and more error-prone. It takes BSPT*2 minutes (at least 1) and you must make a spell caster level check at DC10+2*spell level to succeed.
