Maximized Dispel Magic!?!? (In a New Way)

Okay, so I know you can't maximize the 1d20+10 check in Dispel Magic.

I have a player that wants to Maximize Dispel Magic, and possibly Empower Dispel Magic and have it apply to the 1d4 rounds that a magic item is suppressed.

First of all, I have never heard of anyone wanting to apply those metamagic feats in this way, and I would like to know people's thoughts on this.

Yeah, he could do that. But it'd be much more effective just to Extend it.

I don't think Extend would work, since that's not a duration per se - just an effect. Dispel magic itself is still instantaneous.

+2 levels for 1 to 6 rounds? Why not.

+4 levels for 4 rounds? He's nuts.

Even when it only costs +3 levels for 4 rounds he's still nuts.

I suppose if you're an Incantatrix and really need those rounds...

Or just have rod/xxx of metamagic - Maximize. No level cost at all.

True, but there's usually better uses for those then suppressing items for 4 rounds.

So the long and the short of it is.... sure, it's legal, it's just a little underpowered for the cost you pay.... but then again, that's true of a lot of metamagic applications.
