Well, dolphins and other whales are very closely related (ie the same species), otherwise the crossbreed would be infertile like mules and ligers/tigons.

Half-elves and half-orcs are not to unbelievable in my book. Half-elves and half-orcs being fertile OTOH is a bit more of a stretch. But then, it is a fantasy game, so who cares.

glass.

So is that a half-dolphin whale or a half-whale dolphin, or did they stat them up as a non-templated hybrid like the half-orc? :)

Actually, not really. Someone with more zoological expertise can perhaps dig up specifics, but not all near-species crossbreeds follow the pattern of the mule.

Close, yes. Same species... well, by the article, no. The whales and dolphins are in the same family, but not the same species. While interbreeding is one major indicator for species, it is not the only one.

"species" is a pretty gray area, anyway, more defined practically than genetically by what can and does breed true in more-or-less straight line. Most of the time, whales and dolphins don't mate, so they're basically separate species. That gives no indication of whether or not they CAN, though....

Meanwhile, a wiener dog and a great dane are the same species, but mating....well.....I'd hate to envision it....

OMG Wheee!!!

That is inspiring, since I'll allow pc dolphins when I run underwater adventures. Crazy, crazy... but I like it.

I wouldn't allow dolphins as PCs... Although I have a the delphins, a race of shapeshifting cetaceans, who can adopt a humanoid shape but are nearly undistinguishable from dolphins when in their natural form.
