Mazes & Monsters: Any Good?

Angel Tarragon

Dawn Dragon
I'm contemplating some DVD purchases and Amazon has M&M on the cheap. I'd like to know how some of my peers think about it before dedicating the money to it though.

I liken it to Jack Chick's Dark Dungeons in purpose. It shows what some people think about our hobby and how dangerous it can be to let yourself escape for a bit of fun. It's like one of those afternoon specials on the dangers of roleplaying. It's good for a laugh, but as a made for television movie, it is not Tom Hank's best role by far. My wife picked it up for me on a whim, thinking I would like it. It was good for a laugh, I guess.

I'm not sure how it would make one mad. It's not a well done movie. The writing is bad, the acting is bad, it is not even funny bad like some movies luck into.

Yup. It's nothing to get worked up over it. Just a badly done made-for-tv movie that happened to have Tom Hanks (early in his career) and catered to the fear of RPGs that was rampant at the time. I named an NPC cleric Pardue who always introduced himself "I am Pardue, and I am a holy man." in honor of the movie. I wouldn't spend more than a buck or two on it, since you can get it cheap in discount bins if you keep your eyes open.

It's total crap with absolutely no redeeming qualities.

I take exception to this.

If it had not been for Mazes & Monsters I likely would never have discovered D&D. I saw the movie as a kid and read the associated newspaper article fluff-pieces at the time and thought to myself, "I HAVE to play that!" :)

Are you a drinking man? If so, hammer some back and tear it apart like in Mystery Science Theater 3000 fashion. Or, turn it into a drinking game, like hammer back a shot when something stupid happens.
