MCWoD second edition?

I'd like to discuss the true rumor that Monte Cook's World of Darkness is going to get a reprint? (it's true that I'm starting this rumor... which has no basis in fact, btw)

Well... I would, but sadly I'm the only person who seems to know about this game, and the stupid book is out of print, and I can't find it anywhere for les than $100.

I mean, what, is this Lucasfilm? I have to pay a pile of money because it's so famous? Well, no, and it's a great little book, but there's a lot that could be done with it that just isn't getting done. It should be OGL, Pathfinder compatible, the works. I should be playing Vampires in every PF game I run. There, I said it.

Anyway, that's the crux of my dilemma. Good game, not enough fanfare.

I feel your pain, I had a chance to buy the book when was new and passed it up. Then I had the chance to buy it used for $10 just recently at a garage sale, that book was in my pile of unplayed systems before you could say OGL.

Anyway It's kinda sad how little press and fanfare the book got.

An FLGS here has one for list. Want it?

edit: not being snarky, just trying to be helpful.

Amazon.com: Used and New: Monte Cooks World of Darkness (World of Darkness (White Wolf Hardcover))

On Amazon, it's CHEAPER than it was new. (New was $49.99, it's in stock on amazon for $34.21 and ships for free with super saver shipping). Or you could buy it from amazon marketplace for even less.

A quick search of ebay has it in the $30-$40 range as well.

Not sure why you can't find it for less than $100. EDIT: That wasn't meant to be snarky...I genuinely don't understand how, if you've looked, you've been unable to find it on the cheap.

Someone posted on RPG Net in their sale list that they have one for $15. I know I've seen a few at used book stores and saw some at Origins for less then cover price.

Wow! You guys are amazing! I should get you to look for Jimmy Hoffa while you're at it!

Maybe the prices changed since I looked for it. Cheapest I found was $25 for the pdf!

However, I was hoping there could be momentum towards a fixed up 2nd edition. Maybe less fluff (good stuff, but seems to be a lot of it) and more crunch (monster stats, magic items, adventures...?)

What would a d20 World of Darkness ruleset be like OTHER than the one presented?

I'd keep most elements, but get the Vampires more traditional, fix the werewolves to full moon only, and have Mages calm down a bit (ie: fix the regenerating Mana to only after resting) and maybe rework some of the schools a bit (though that's part of their thing). Liking the awakened, though, and the setting on the brink is a neat idea, and well accomplished for the most part.

I suppose I'd like to see what a good WoD session looks like. It's a different style of game from standard D&D, which means making it a "game" and not just a "listen to the GM talk about his novel" is something I've always wanted to see in action/learn how to do. Same for modern games of all sorts!

(hrm, gonna have to think about that one)

Any help for that?

Personally I suspect much of the problem was:

A. White Wolf intentially crippled its audience/acceptance by clearly stating it would be a single-shot offering with no follow-up/support.

B. Perhaps just as important was/is White Wolf and d20 players seemed diametrically opposed (much like the 3.x/4 flame wars) further limiting what little chance there was/is of finding groups willing to consider this mashup.

That said, I personally would love to see further expansion regarding conditions both inside and outside the impact zone, if/where other zones exist (because surely the USA wasnt the only place so-affected), how to create magical items (missing from RAW because Mages are still grasping the how/why of Rotes during this initial year, so none(?) have discovered Tass/etc). Likewise many d20 spells cant be duplicated per RAW because the necessary components were omitted/overlooked. Similar problems with Vampires/etc likely exist.

Doh! I saw one at Half Price Books the other day.

EDIT: Incidentally, em-cee-double-u-oh-dee sounds a great intro for an old school rap song.

I own and enjoy it. Some of the coolest class design in any d20 product ever.

It really suffers from a limited number of supernatural creatures, though. I find it hard to imagine a game of Vampires, Werewolves, Mages, Demons and Awakened fighting each other and only each other for an entire 20 level campaign. This game would be perfect with even just one large expansion to describe a few more supernatural races.

I think you really need to convert some 3.x monsters over. Shouldn't be too difficult.

McWoD: rap, sure, but I keep thinking it's some new McDonald's product.

Creatures: I asked on their forum, and Skip Williams said it's 3.5 so I should just use those critters. Okay, great, but why do we use Defense and not AC if it's 3.5? "well, PCs don't use armor, so we gave them defense". Good answer, actually, and it shows that designers of games don't have the uptight blank-retentive hangups that the audience has. (I mean, apparently the Paizo crowd and the WotC design team have family barbeques sans bloodshed...)
In short, I suppose 3.5 or d20 modern would work just fine for a monster base. I'm going to double check and see if d20 modern critters work, or how easily d20 Modern/future/apocalypse slots in with this game. In theory it's not that hard to convert stuff over, or just wing it. Winging it seems to be something a GM would need to do with this game as it is, or go insane/crash/burn.
