How does that work out as crunch? I like the idea of an item taking energy from the deeds done with it, for good or evil...

Basically, what are the numeric bonuses and specific abilities of the weapon?
Oh. I forget the details now, I'll need to look it up. It dealt bludgeoning damage despite being a greatsword, it gained enhancements as I leveled and had the ability to do a small amount of sand/[Earth] type related spells per day, nothing overly powerful.

We never completed the campaign, but the PC was going to eventually fulfill his quest and upon establishing his own kingdom, he'd embed the sword into the earth and it would create a stone pillar as a monument with the blade stuck, very Excalibur-ish.

I'd be interested in know how it accumulated power, the idea of a weapon growing in power is interesting...

Are you Familar with Weapons of Legacy?

Excerpt.

Building A Weapon of Legacy For Dummies.

Personal Disclaimer: I'm not a huge fan of Weapons of Legacy. I'd encourage any good DM to be familiar with the concept and the mechanic, and then consider making your own custom Legacy Weapons. The mechanic for Legacy Weapons requires some sacrafice on the part of the PC to develop the evolving weapon, and that should be weighed against not having one. Use at your own risk.
