D&D 5E Meanwhile - new DMs are having fun! How was your very first session as a GM/DM?

My first time playing (it was 3.5ed) was a lot of fun. Admittedly, it was probably hell for the poor DM, they had planned a gritty, human-centric desert campaign, and when we sat down to build characters, someone said ... what if we all played female elf Spice Girls, and we all went for it.

My first time DMing (also 3.5) was not great. I attempted to run Age of Worms, modified for Eberron and we had two Warforged PCs and a Cleric (Yes, I know. Mistakes were made). Things didn't go well, and after a TPK killed the campaign I didn't sit behind a DMs screen again until 4e came along. And tbh, I'm grateful that I've had way more fun DMing 4e and 5e, after 3.5 kinda convinced me I didn't have what it takes.
