Mechanical justifcation for fighting with one hand?

So I'm trying to make a character with a focus more on flavor than on stats for once, and I've decided on a swashbuckler with a rapier... And just a rapier. He may fight with a glass of wine in his other hand, but in general I wouldn't use an off hand weapon, wouldn't use a shield, and wouldn't use a two-hander...

Unfortunately, the munchkin inside is screaming at me for the wasted potential... So to help sate the beast, is there any way I could justify this? A feat, a prestige class, etc?

Well, there's the Einhander feat from PHBII. Gives certain benefits to a character wielding one-handed. It ain't great, but it's something. It's actually designed for a fencing, swashbucklery fighting style.

Beyond that, a single-hander with Quick Draw can alternate between melee attakcs and thrown weapons.

Are you a human, elf, half-elf, gnome, or halfling?

In that case, you might want to carry a torch to see in the dark.

Or you could buy one of those "fully 30%" of magic weapons that shine in the dark. None of the races with darkvision ever buy them...

That sounds perfect, actually... I was actually looking at the Throw Anything feat in CW and thinking it'd be cool if he could actually throw anything (i.e. beer mugs, chairs, etc) instead of just weapons he was proficient with... I know that in D20 Modern the infiltrator advanced class had some ability to used improvised weapons proficiently... Wonder if I can find anything like that for D&D...

Grazie!

I was thinking, if I could get up the courage, of playing a half-elf... But I think that's a little too far for me. Besides, I just got this feat-intensive idea of quick draw/einhander/throwing stuff, so I think a human's the best route.

Our DM doesn't really enforce darkness rules, so it's a wash anyways.
