[MEG] We may be a bit slow getting back to you...

Thanks all,

I am sort of back now but things are still tough. My mother is still, after two weeks, on a ventalator and still in the Critical Care Unit. They have just now began to wake her up from sedation feeling her heart and lungs is strong enough now to consider attempting taking her off ventalation.

My Mom was a smoker from the time she was about 13 and she is really paying for it now unfortunately. She also has Lupus. Her Heart actually is recovering well from the attack but her lungs are a mess and it complicates her hearts ability to heal as it has to work so hard to keep her getting oxegen.
If any of you are smokers I am not slamming you but take this to heart. If she was not a smoker for so long, even with Lupus, she would have already been out of CCU and in recovery but her lung disease is bad from all those years of smoking and the condition has made this very hard on her body. Add the lupus and she still has a tough fight on the road to recovery.
Even if she recovers as fully as possible she will likely need to keep oxegen around due to the advanced lung disease and her now weaker heart.
If only she had quite many years ago. Well, she has to quite now regardless.

So again, thanks so much for keeping me and my Mom in your thoughts. I am scampering to catch up on things now so if you sent me emails I may be slow getting back to you but I will get back to ya.

Glad to hear that she may make it! My mom had a heart attack nine years ago. She was a smoker too. (She didn't have the Lupus though.) Mom wasn't conscious for five days, but did live, so I know what you're going through. So I sincerely hope for the best for your mom. If she's lucky, the worst of the withdrawal from the smoking happened while she was sedated.

It does get better! Just hang in there.

Doug,

I'm sorry to hear about your mother. My mother is thankfully not a smoker, but she does have Lupus. I'm actually surprised at how common it is. Anyway, I understand how serious this is, and I hope she makes a full recovery.

I wish you and your family good luck in the coming weeks and months.

Doug,

Best wishes to your mother for a speedy recovery.

My father smoked camel unfiltered cigarettes for years, he stopped when he was told he had lung cancer, but by then it was too late. I have never understood how companies can sell a product and deliberately make it addictive when its only function is to kill people.

I want to thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Unfortunately, over last weekend my mother took a turn for the worse with an infection and did not recover. We will miss her a great deal, she was not only a mother to me, my brothers and half our friends but she was a confidant and close friend as well.

Many will mourn her passing. She had lots of friends and she was one of the people who everyone sought advice from. Heck, even some of my friends in California would call me and say " I went to visit your mom today" all the time.

So, please be patient if I am late getting back to you or have failed to get back to you. Give me a friendly reminder at some point. This has been a tough month for me personally and we have so much going on at MEG it is overwhelming.
