D&D 5E Meld into Stone - easy long rests mid-dungeon?

Meld into stone, level 3 ritual. Has range touch. Lasts 8 hours. Not concentration. Cant a party with this ritual cast it on the whole party and everybody merges into the rock wall and sleeps for 8 hours and boom, long rest reset mid-dungeon no problemo?

Sure. Of course, it takes 10 minutes each time, and sooner or later something's going to wander along when it's only the caster left by himself, and eat him. ;)

Seems fine to me, just like rope trick and short rests.

But Rope Trick isnt a ritual. And it only does short rests.

I just didnt think you could do that in older editions with Meld with Stone (self only, or something). Not sure.

Anyways.... I dont really mind the idea of a safe long rest mid-dungeon - balance wise the long rest has a 24 hr reset period (or something similar). A very potent effect however, and ritual.... albeit I guess only on cleric and druid lists.

Depending on the party size it'll take him about 40 minutes to cast it, ample time for a monster or two to come on in and attack a weakened party. As a DM if this was constantly abused, I would also have a bunch of monsters set up shop right outside the wall, not knowing that there were adventurers there, but neither would the adventurers know the monsters were there. Alternatively...

"Hey Bob, you wanna know something? I've always hated this stone wall."
"Yeah, why do you say that Bill?"
"I dunno, I just think the dungeon would flow a lot better into the torture chamber if we tore this wall down."
"Ya know Bill, I think you're right. Let's tear it down right now."

Uh... no.

Meld into stone quite specifically allows "You"- the caster- to meld into stone. Nothing indicates that anyone else can benefit. The range of Touch indicates that you have to touch the stone that you're going to meld into.

Seems fine. It's this level of power that makes the lower dungeon levels the exclusive purview of higher-level adventurers. :)

This is my interpretation as well. Cannot be used on anyone but yourself.

"Rest" while entombed in rock? Yeah, if I ever run a mentally disturbed PC, they might be all over that. Otherwise, I think I'd rather take my chances with the monsters (regardless of the meta-knowledge that the spell is completely safe).

I don't think I've ever lacked doing a short or long rest (with or without those names in whatever edition) because of lack of safe place to go.

Lack of rest has always been, There stuff happening RIGHT NOW!!!! hurry!

locking your self in stone isn't going to help the fact that you can't sleep 8 hours when the orcs will be at the gates in 4.
