Men steal house, take it home.

A Wicked Kendragon
Week old news, but I only just saw it, and couldn't find any mention of it here.

From the Tyler Morning Telegraph:

"Officers got about five trailer loads of property that came out of that house, ...Well, it didn't come out of the house. It was the house."

"...about 90 percent of the house was found at Vega's residence. The brick and shingles are still unaccounted for."

And it took them three months to do it. :D

I don't know jack about the drug market but I'd guess that you've got to pull a lot of second hand bathroom fixtures out of a place to afford a decent fix these days.

The only similar tale I've ever heard was from a coworker years ago. He told me that one day a big moving truck pulled up to a nearby house. Men in coveralls began removing stuff from the house for a couple days as the neighbors all watched with slight puzzlement. They hadn't realized those folks were moving.

That's because they weren't. The thieves stripped the place completely clean in broad daylight with tons of witnesses. They even took the pictures off the walls. They got away with it completely.

Hope my neighbors are smarter than that.

A guy I knew who was a security consultant encountered something similar at a department store. The store was having shopplifting problems, except with couches, dishwashers, and other things that couldn't exactly be carried under a shirt. They were convinced that the employees were staying late and taking stuff. Turns out it was a couple of guys who would just drive up in a truck and take the stuff right off the loading dock. They wore coveralls and had clipboards so no one questioned them.

Truth is stranger than fiction.

You can get away with just about anything if you're carrying a clipboard.

Heh. I've always said that if you want to get into any government building then just carry a roll of plans with you. You know, just some large sized rolled up papers either in a tube or with a rubber band around it. If anybody asks then you just say, "I'm here to go over these plans with somebody in the *mumble* department."

If you walk around with a roll of papers like that, people will assume that you're competant. They think to themselves, "That guy has got plans and is going places."

When I worked for the EPA we had a work shop on gaining legal access to properties without search warrrants. Most of it boiled down to carry a clipboard and wear a name tag. If anyone asked your name or business demand their name, write it down, and ask for ID. Then ask where the supervisor is. People generally fled rather than submit to our questions.
