"Mentions" - did something change?

In the past, when someone mentioned me in a post (as in, typed '@' followed by my username) I'd get a notification and could thus easily check it out.

Today, I was mentioned and no notification arrived; I just happened to notice it while catching up on the thread. It's in post 51 of this thread:

Have mentions become a supporters-only thing, or is there a glitch?

Yeah, doesn't work. Even if you use the mention tags, like this...

[MENTION=29398]Lanefan[/MENTION]

...you just get this:

[MENTION=29398]Lanefan[/MENTION]

Edit: Huh, the preview showed it failing, but it looks like it worked after all.

Looking closely, there's a bunch of tags around the Lanefan non-mention in Helldritch's post. Maybe it was that?

Mention in post 2 worked as normal. Mention in post 5 did not. I've no idea what the difference is, except maybe [MENTION=6855114]Helldritch[/MENTION] was trying to make it look like a mention (bold, italics, link) without realizing the system did it automatically?
