Mercenaries: Born in Blood Forum Now Open!

You've tasted blood before, whether it was yours or others; it's all the same. It runs hot, dark and sticky as it falls to the ground in an endless torrent. There have been plenty of weapons, armor and men left broken on nameless battlefields -- but do you care? No. Why should you when you're the one left standing? It comes down to two very important things... first is survival and second is collecting your pay for services rendered. Paladins and heroes do it for the 'greater good', you're just in it for the payoff. After all, you're not doing this for free are you?

Mercenaries: Born in Blood will explore mercenaries throughout "real-world" history, how they've been used in fiction, tips for using them in your game, new feats, skills, and prestige classes, as well as 6 samples for use in a fantasy game, 2 for use in a pulp/modern game, and 2 for use in a sci-fi game.

It will be 176 pages, hardcover, and retail for $29.99.

G'day Mike,

Fantastic, looks good but what's the ETA - I mean seems like I've been waiting 18 months for Forbidden Kingdoms by Otherworld, is this going to be a long wait as well???

Cheers

FK should be back from the printers soon... :)

And Mercs is due for an August release. I personally can't *wait* for people to see this book. Mike has done a wonderful job.

Cities: Born in Stone sounds interesting, the major campaign I run is set in Waterdeep and is and urban, thief focused game, so this book could be very useful if done well. As for existing products, you may want to check out the Cities of Mystery ESD from WotC shop. It is an old 2nd ed book, but has alot of information on creating and running cities that you could draw upon.

I asked this elsewhere and only got flamed by one of your company shills, but 6 samples of what? When you have a long list of something, then say sample, you should try to make it as clear as possible. I would guess Prestige Class since it was last, but you never know.

Based on the outline for Cities, I would guess six sample mercenary units, since I will be including six sample cities. (Actually, more than six, since there will be some modern and future cities covered as well.)

Thanks! It's the book I always wished someone would publish, but no one did, so, I'm going to write it myself. I will probably avoid the Cities of Mystery book, though -- other than material which is OGC, I try to avoid any other gaming books on the topics I write about, because I don't want even subconscious plagiarism to occur. If my work happens to overlap with something else, I want it to be an honest case of spontaneous creation.

I *am*, however, doing massive amounts of historical research, so that when I add on the layers of fantasy, they'll be layered on top of history. (Currently reading about Victorian criminal gangs -- sure, it's out of the time period, but the traditional RPG style of thief and thieves' guild is much more Victorian than Medeival. Anachronism isn't a sin if you know you're committing it...) (As if D&D, with its pre-Roman Celtic Druids rubbing shoulders with 14th century plate armored knights is a model of historical accuracy...)

TJ, I've been trying to keep up on every Vergo question, but I don't remember yours. Also, who "flamed" you? I'd like to look into it.

On to your question. The samples will be of the subject matter. In Mercs, there will be (at least) 6 sample Merc companies for use in a fantasy/historical game, 2 for a pulp/modern game, and 2 for a sci-fi game. In Cities, same thing. 6 for fantasy, 2 for pulp, 2 for sci-fi.

Hope that answers your question.
